Botswana
Colors and meaning
Light blue #75AADB
Water, above all the rain that is central to Botswana's arid economy
Black #000000
Black citizens, and the black-and-white stripe together nods to racial harmony
White #FFFFFF
White citizens and the fairness sought at independence
Symbolism and history
A black stripe fringed by thin white lines crosses a light blue field. The blue was chosen specifically to avoid the red, black, green or gold used by many liberation-era African flags, aligning instead with the national motto "Pula" (rain).
