Symbolism and history
A yellow-and-white vertical bicolor bears the crossed golden and silver Keys of Saint Peter beneath the Papal tiara on its white half, adopted in 1929 when the Lateran Treaty created Vatican City as a sovereign state, making it, alongside Switzerland, one of only two square national flags in the world.
