Symbolism and history
Four white five-pointed stars, one for each of the federation's constituent states (Chuuk, Kosrae, Pohnpei and Yap), are arranged in a square on a plain light blue field, a design adopted at independence in 1978 and inspired by the flag once used by the wider UN Trust Territory.
