Symbolism and history

Fourteen red-and-white stripes and a blue canton bearing a crescent and 14-point star directly echo the layout of the US flag, with stripe and star counts updated in 1963 to reflect the addition of Sabah, Sarawak and (briefly) Singapore to the federation.
